Feb. 6 Fort Pierce Westwood 72, John Carroll 61 Top scorers: Justin Black (JC) 20 pts., Chris Dixon (FPW) 17 pts. Feb. 5 St. Lucie West Centennial 79, South Fork 73 (OT) Top scorers: Terrell Slater (SLWC) 36 pts., Ferrel Graham (SF) 27 pts., Eric Dickinson (SF) 15 pts., Charles Singeltary (SLW) 14 pts. Game Notes Centennial's Terrell Slater has scored 36 points in each of Centennial's last three games. South Fork continues to improve. However, they just can't seem to win. They have taken several quality teams to overtime this year. Just no luck finishing on top. Feb. 5 Vero Beach 76, Fort Pierce Westwood 43 Top scorers: Feb. 5 Martin County 63, Jupiter 56 Top scorers: Alex Kaklamanos (JHS) 20 pts., Korey Mitchell (MCHS) 16 pts., Hurley Dunbar (MCHS) 14 pts. Feb. 2 Palm Beach Gardens 48, Vero Beach 45 Top scorers: Ricky Banner (VB) 14 pts., Ryan Maultsby (VB) 14 pts., Mike Brown (PBG) 13 pts. Game Notes Here comes the Gardens machine. They have gotten a couple of key players back from injury and academic problems. What happens next? They start winning basketball games. They have gone through District 6-6A with ease as of late. The team seems to be peaking at the right time. Feb. 2 Lincoln Park 70, Inlet Grove 26 Top scorers: William Potts (LPA) 17 pts., Gary Lopater (LPA) 10 pts. Feb. 2 Port St. Lucie 64, Ft. Pierce Central 36 Top scorers: Richard Damus (PSL) 25 pts., Troy Hall (PSL) 11 pts. Feb. 2 Brevard Christian 70, St. Edwards 65 Top scorers: Feb. 1 Ft. Pierce Westwood 59,Martin County 49 Top scorers: Edgar Castro (FPW) 17 pts., Chris Dixon (FPW) 12 pts., Korey Mitchell (MC) 11 pts. Game Notes Martin County has lost 4 games in a row and is anxiously awaiting Hurley Dunbar's return to the hardwood. His cameo appearance in tonight's game didn't help the Tigers in this home game loss. Coach McIntyre has got to find the solution to his team's poor performance. It looks like the Tigers will be ranked 4th in District 6-6A and will face No. 5, Royal Palm Beach. The Tigers better get serious or they will find themselves out of a playoff run again this year. Feb. 1 St. Lucie West Centennial 70, Port St. Lucie 63 Top scorers: Terrell Slater (SLWC) 36 pts., Charles Singletary (SLWC) 21 pts., Richard Damus (PSL) 15 pts. Game Notes Coach Rick McHardy finds his prayers answered in the form of guards, Slater and Singletary. The Eagles are ranked No. 1 in District 14-4A going undefeated again this season. I really expected more out of Port St. Lucie this year. Richard Damus has been inconsistent on the offense end. His 19.2 PPG average is suspect as he has averaged only 12.2 PPG over the last 5 games. The Jaguars will play Sebastian River in their district tournament for playoff contention. Centennial shoud have an easy time against Okeechobee. Feb. 1 Boca Raton 67, South Fork 65 Top scorers: Game Notes South Fork showed some not so great effort in their home game loss. Coach Danny England has struggled with point guard Ferrel Graham's turnover to assist ratio the entire season. Graham apears to take the entire load of winning the game on his shoulders. Unfortunately, the shoulders of this 5'6" point guard are too small. His poor selection of dribble penetration and untimely turnovers when dribbling through a press, which he is capable of, are too much for the Bulldogs. Eric Dickinson and James Dixon play through it all while the team continues to struggle. The Bulldogs were actually winning the entire game save the last 58.5 seconds. Graham's turnovers cost the Bulldogs another victory. South Fork may get another chance against Boca in their District 14-5A tournament. Feb. 1 Palm Beach Lakes 54, Vero Beach 45 Top scorers: Randy Jones (PBL) 25 pts., Ryan Maultsby (VB) 19 pts. Game Notes The No. 1 and 2 teams in District 6-6A head to head. Lakes prevailed tonight. They shut down Tommy Biggoms allowing him only 5 points. Vero Beach is quite impressive this year considering this looked like an "off" year for them. Their 21-3 record is impressive. They have defeated teams when they needed to. However, Palm Beach Gardens got their big men back and rolling. Gardens knocked off Lakes last week. Can Gardens win the district? We will have to wait and see. Meanwhile, the Lakes machine has rejuvenated itself and looks poised to capture the District. A good solid win for the Rams this evening. Feb. 1 William T. Dwyer 73, Fort Pierce Central 45 Top scorers: Cory Young (WTD) 16 pts., Cetus Fobbs (WTD) 16 pts., Duane Taylor (FPC) 14 pts. Game Notes Duane Taylor should have followed his brother Darryl to Port St. Lucie High. He may be the main effort for Central. But, Central just lacks any depth. On the other hand, the boys from Dwyer are for real. The way that District 14-5A is shaping up calls for Dwyer and first year Boynton Beach to meet in the championship. Unfortunate for Fort Pierce Central, but that's life. There is always next year. Feb. 1 Suncoast 76, Lincoln Park 69 Top scorers: Marques Mawell (SHS) 23 pts., William Potts (LPA) 21 pts., Mike Merritt (SHS) 21 pts. Game Notes Lincoln Park is still my pick for most improved team this year. Their combination of young guards has proven quite successful for coach Tony Seabury's first year. Can they beat Cardinal Newman for a 3rd time in District 13-3A? We will have to wait and see. Good luck guys, Cardinal Newman will be coming off of an impressive win over Pahokee. Demetrius Hodge looks like he wants to continue to play basketball a little longer before his move to Virginia Tech.
