Coaching Basketball's Scramble Defense Book and Videos

by Jim Larranaga, head coach George Mason University

The Scramble Defense has become a popular system of pressure defense within a man-to-man environment. Coach Jim Larranaga has used this system since coaching at Bowling Green University, Davidson, and Virginia. Coach Larranaga has been using this defensive system since 1981. Over the years, Coach Larranaga has developed a system of trapping that can disrupt a team's rhythm both in the half court and full court. The beauty of this defense is that your team need not be the "quickest" to utilize it.

There are two videos available the Half-court Scramble and the Full-court Scramble. Each video follows the same basic concepts and principles for trapping. Although I preferred the half-court video. Coach Larranaga demonstrates, both through "chalk talk" and player demonstration, the basics of the defense and the keys to developing a trapping sequence. Also, the use of game footage, on both videos, is nice to see all the hard work pay off. You must keep in mind that the Scramble Defense is based on zone press principles. Also, the principles of a man-to-man defense are a requirement. Your players must have the ability to match up when not able to trap according to the basic rules of the Scramble. Coach Larranaga goes into detail on trapping rotations, a big plus for the video. Everyone can learn something from his explanations.

The video explains the Scramble defense well but I always like reading a good book. This book definitely succeeds. Each chapter contains specific information necessary to implement the Scramble. His "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" are key to executing the defense.

"Thumbs Down" refers to trapping the entry pass receiver and all down ward passes. The rules in applying "Thumbs Down" include :

  • Pressure the ball.
  • Everyone moves in the direction of the ball.
  • Beat the ball to the pass receiver.
  • Trappers - seal traps with their hands high, legs crossed, mirroring the ball.
  • Interceptors - anticipate the pass, rotate.
  • Steal, deflect, or defend any pass out of the trap.
  • "Run to where your help came from" when leaving a trap.
  • Make pass look open - then take it away.
  • Continue to trap under either of the following conditions: a downward pass; or the player receiving the pass is only 15' to 20' away.
  • Recover to man-to-man on ball reversal.
  • Contest every shot.
  • "Run to rebound"; be prepared to rebound, especially trappers. "Thumbs Up" refers to trapping the dribbler. The rules in applying "Thumbs Up" include :
  • Pressure the ball.
  • Surprise the dribbler, trap up
  • Anticipate and rotate.
  • Seal the trap. Hands high. Legs crossed. Mirror the ball.
  • Steal, deflect, or defend any pass out of the trap.
  • "Run to where your help came from" when leaving a trap.
  • Make pass look open - then take it away.
  • Continue to trap on downward pass when under either of the following conditions: a downward pass, not outward; or the player receiving the pass is only 15' to 20' away.
  • Trap the dribbler on all ball screens.
  • Know your job - trapper, interceptor, or goaltender.
There is a chapter on both "Thumbs Up" and "Thumbs Down", each goes into detail on proper trapping sequences, drills (from 1-on-1 to 5-on-5), and illustrations for implementing each. Other chapters cover communication, the mental game, and practice plans for implementing the Scramble defense. The book is thorough it providing information without getting wordy or boring. The illustrations for the drills are a plus as well. I am not taking anything away from the videos. The videos are an excellent resource for coaches that need the visual, but the book is a definite plus. I really like what Coach Larranaga has accomplished through his pressure defense system. Excellent quality coaching advice.
