FLORIDA'S TREASURE COAST TOP PREP RECRUITS
August 22, 2001
by Guy Power
PRE-SEASON LOOKS
The top teams of the area last year were the Vero Beach Indians (6A), Pt. St. Lucie Jaguars(5A), and the St. Lucie West Centennial Eagles (4A).
These teams provided some spectacular games. Fort Pierce Central showed they can play basketball and could be a surprise this season. The addition
of their new head coach could be just the ticket they need. Now it's Lincoln Park Academy's turn, they have decided to give Tony Seabury the position.
Vero Beach returns a few starters and Coach Chuck Loewendick always brings a good squad. Port St. Lucie has the best chance of going somewhere
this year. PSL's coach John Picchiarini's front court of the Damus brothers, Carl and Richard, should provide crowds with great rebounding and
defensive effort from younger brother, Carl, and offense from Richard. The big surprise is Coach "Pic" has been working on Richard's outside
game. Who is going to defend this 6'8" guard?
Martin County High School has gotten some much needed "fire power" for their squad with the move of Hurley Dunbar from South Fork High School
and the return of guard Korey Mitchell. The key for Martin County is to get their front court woes under control. Unfortunately, South Fork lost
their best player in Dunbar and Coach Danny England will be looking to his young point guard, James Dixon, to provide the loss of Dunbar's explosive offense.
South Fork is still missing a "big guy" in the middle but they showed they can play well without one from last years results. Fellow sophomores Jonathan
Stellman and Roger Kenna will really have to improve their game if South Fork is going to do well this season.
The biggest surprise of the year could be John Carroll. They are worth noting, although they are not in the Treasure Lake Conference. They have a
new head coach, Steve Ripley (former girl's coach at PSL). He will have a young squad in their freshman players, but these kids can play. Unfortunately, last year's 2A champion Benjamin is in their
district so we will all have to wait and see if John Carroll can at least finish second in their district. Good Luck, COACH!!
Last, but certainly not least, is St. Lucie West Centennial. Coach Rick McHardy had the opportunity to rely on the "Batman and Robin" of the
area in Tyrrell Hightower and Eddie Robinson for the past three years. Starters Terrell Slater and Charles Singletary will have to push their
game to new "heights" if this program is to continue winning games. Hightower and Robinson were 2 of only 3 seniors last year but provided
over 60 percent of the Eagle's offense. Slater and Singletary can provide some of the needed offense. Coach McHardy needs to concentrate on
his team's defense if they are going to win much this season.
