FEATS OF THE WEEK: The city of Los Angeles now boasts two top-10 teams with the addition of eighth-ranked Westchester. The Comets moved up from No. 14 after defeating league rival and then-No. 4-ranked Fairfax, 87-72, at Westchester. Senior Scott Cutley scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the victors . . . Nick Shaw of South Amboy, N.J., scored an amazing 73 points but couldn't prevent his team from a 98-89 overtime loss to Perth Amboy Tech. The 5-11 guard's outing was good enough to break his school's single-game scoring record, but fell well short of the state mark of 100 points set by current Cleveland Cavalier Dejuan Wagner in 2001 while a senior at Camden . . . No. 20 Springfield, Mo., Kickapoo's easy 96-54 win over Lebanon was momentous for many reasons. Guard Spencer Laurie, a Missouri recruit, broke the Springfield public school record for 3-pointers, coach Roy Green picked up win No. 425, and 6-5 Deven Mitchell shattered a backboard with a thunderous dunk in the first quarter of the game . . . Three days after learning it would be without the services of superstar LeBron James for the rest of the season, top-ranked Akron, Ohio, St. Vincent-St. Mary survived its closest contest of the season, a 63-62 decision over Canton, McKinley. James is expected to appeal the Ohio High School Athletic Association's ruling that rendered him ineligible for the remainder of the season for accepting merchandise from a Cleveland clothing store valued at $845.
