Senior night for Edgewater and they topple Lake Mary. Lake Mary's star junior Darryl Merthie hit 31 points and was game high. Edgewater's super senior Darius Washington's 28 points nearly kept the offensive pace with Merthie. However, a 43-28 half time score said it all as Edgewater closed senior night with another win. Gateway beat Osceola by seven points as two Gateway players (Grant [16 points, 13 rebounds] and Baez [15 pts., 10 rebounds]) had double-doubles to lead the team. Heritage Prep had a blowout win over Community School as Kinsey scored 17 and gathered 10 reb ounds. Community School's Blankenship also had a double-double as had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Dr. Phillips din't need Jason Rich so much as Jack Berry stepped up and scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds in their four points win over Boone. Oakridge defeated Freedom by 12 points largely due to Blake Young's attempt at a triple-double as he had 29 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds. It only helped that Oakridge's Chatelain had a double-double as well as he had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Apopka moved above 0.500 with their win over Lake Brantley. Lake Brantley's Johnson had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. West Oaks was led by Cintron's 17 points and 12 rebounds in their win over Foundation.

Feature Article:
A couple of elite schools to choose from.

In a battle for "elite" private school boasting, Montverde Academy (17-1) defeated the Pendleton School by a score of 71-48. Junior post player Arminus Urbutis missed a double-double by one rebound as he had 21 points and 9 rebounds. Junior guard Vytautas Valiulis didn't miss a double-double as he had 14 points and 14 assists. Nationally ranked 8th grade sensation Michael Beasley led the Pendleton School with 15 points. Montverde Academy defeated the Pendleton School earlier in the year as well. A third game is scheduled in the coming weeks.

A lot was written about the upstart program at the Pendleton School in Bradenton on the IMG Academies campus last year. Current hoop stars like Taurean Green, Danny Morrissey, and Ramel Bradley were flocking to the school to hone their basketball skills and a chance at big time college basketball. Well 2 of the those athletes have signed with big time SEC programs. Green with the University of Florida and Bradley with the University of Kentucky. The future looks bright for re-classified 8th grade sensation Michael Beasley as big time hoops are definitely in his future. However, the varsity team itself has stumbled this year. Taurean Green made it 4 schools in 4 years as he moved back to the east coast to finish his high school career at Cardinal Gibbons. Bradley and Morrissey are playing with the "prep" (i.e. "13th grade") team this year weeding out what should have been considered an elite team.

Enter a small school located near Clermont that has been around since 1912 and a big time coach, Kevin Sutton. Sutton has previously coached at national powerhouse program Bishop McNamara in Forestville, Maryland. Headmaster Kasey Kesselring offered Sutton the opportunity as Director of College Counseling in addition to the position as head coach of the boy's basketball team. An opportunity that Sutton felt he could not pass up. A mild Central Florida climate and the opportunity to work with a diverse student population consisting of 39 different countries. Well, Sutton has a squad of juniors that can play basketball. Arminus Urbutis, Vytautas Valiulis, and Giedriuis Knysas are a few of the standouts on the team that boasts possibly a minimum of 6 Division I prospects. As mentioned, the core of the team is junior strong. Hopefully, the word has gotten out about this new program and Sutton will have a long line of athletes coming to the school looking for a quality education and an opportunity to work with a great coach for next year.

St. Andrews lost their first game of the season this evening. A tough Pahokee squad with Antonio Wilson (21 points) and Charles Bouie (10 points, 12 rebounds) edged the number 5 ranked 2A St. Andrews' squad led by Xavier Perkins (18 points). A 22-11 3rd quarter provided Pahokee the back breaker as St. Andrews could not fully recover. The reverse could be said for the American Heritage-St. Edwards game. Two teams did show up, however it looked like only one played as American rolled over St. Edwards by 59 points.

He's baack! Deland's Keith Brumbaugh has somehow found his way out of grade problems to post a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the team to a win over Seminole. Brumbaugh's teammate, Fisher, finished with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Oviedo embarassed Winter Springs with a 70-46 whoopin'. Brett Hodges led Winter Spring's with 20 points. Hilton Pitts continues to provide the offense as Charlie Coley provides his brand with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The results are still the same, this time the victory was sweet revenge over Boynton Beach. The win puts both teams tied for districts for the moment. Pahokee moved closer back to 0.500 with their overtime victory over Cardinal Newman. Charles Bouie hadd a triple-double of 24 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 blocks. Leading scorer Antonio Wilson had a double-double of 32 points and 13 rebounds. Lincoln Park Academy got back on track after a two game losing skid, to Westwood and Brevard Christian, as they trounced Okeechobee. Andrae Franklin held up his usual game as he went for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jamison Clark had 17 points and Gary Lopater provided the 3rd scorer for the Greyhounds in the win. South Fork handled St. Lucie West Centennial with relative ease as Brennen Grubbs continued his usual double-double effort of 13 points and 14 rebounds. John Carroll took care of King's Academy as junior Matt Marcorelle had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Glades Central's Randy Phillips recorded a double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds as they easily defeated Pope John Paul. P.J. Abbott had 24 points and 11 rebounds but Trinity Christian came up short as Grandview Prep's Francis Agenor provided a last second layup to win the game.

Several good games out of the Tampa area as Gibbs downs Dixie Hollins by three points. Indian Rocks snuck by Palm Harbor by one point. Gulf defeated Tarpon Springs by a single point. Other games featured blowout victories. St. Petersburg by 33 over Pinellas Park. Keswick Christian by 40 points over Temple Heights. Boca Ciega by 36 over Northeast. Seminole losing to Clearwater by 27 points. Amdiral Farragut shutting down Tampa Prep and finishing with a 29 point victory. Hot gossip has Oldsmar Christian playing an ineligible player in Jesse Rodriguez. We'll have to wait and see what is up. In the meantime, Oldsmar Christian crushed Pepin Academy by a score of 103-35. Danny Ortiz provided the offensive power as he hit 9 3's on his way to a 38 point game.

Central East Florida
Florida Air Academy just couldn't handle it. Cocoa Beach did something that no other Brevard County has done in Florida Air Academy's coach Aubin Goporo's four years, beat Florida Air. Carl McNally and Braxton Williams combined for 35 points for Cocoa Beach. Weekend talk said it could be done and it was. Kansas-signed 6'11" Alexander Kaun had a dismal game as he hit a single field goal the entire game. Florida Air Academy junior guard Walter Hodge has been providing much of the Falcons offense this season. Hodge just couldn't supply enough for this one.

North East Florida

Central Florida
Jones defeated Cypress Creek, barely by a score of 64-61. Antoine Dade had 13 points and 12 rebounds in the winning effort. Cypress Creek's Kirlew contributed 20 points and 14 rebounds. Not much ever gets mentioned about John Carroll without talking about junior Matt Marcorelle. However, Marcorelle suffered an injury earlier in the season and John Carroll was looking for someone to step up. Junior Eber Wright has proven to be the second scorer that coach Steve Ripley has been looking for. His mid-range jumper has gotten better and his conditioning is definitely up. Wright has improved his game immensely since last year. He will have to work on his ball handling to succeed at the college level.

Corey Claitt (Palm Beach Lakes) 17.8 PPG

There has been a lot of talk of Palm Beach Lakes and their getting back to Lakeland. They had a squad last year. The "oak trees" of Louis Graham and Marcus Hubbard have been replaced by guards sophomore Corey Claitt and junior Jarrett Brown. Claitt has a lot going for him. He has a good middle range jump shot, strokes the 3-pointer when necessary, and takes good care of the ball. He got a chance to prove himself last week in the Martin Luther King Tournament held at Palm Beach Lakes. The Rams outplayed Jacksonville Raines for most of the game. It was only a last second shot from Claitt blocked by Derwin Kitchen that kept Lakes from winning the game. Although, an injury to Lakes' sophomore point guard was more the reason for the loss.
