City of Palms Classic, Fort Myers, Florida

Dec. 22

Challenge Round - Game 1
Oakland Technical, Oakland California vs. Lehigh Lightning, Fort Myers, FL

Oakland Technical Bulldogs defeats Lehigh Lightning. Two words - Leon Powe! He is not the most fundamental kid on the block, but he can play. He showed a variety of moves and a couple of athletic dunks to lead Oak Tech with 26 points to the win. Lehigh's lone standout, Anthony Paez, who managed to get the lone "Florida" vote for the All Tournament team, kept Lehigh close until the 4th quarter. Oak Tech managed to deny him the ball for several minutes and they never looked back. Rick Pitino showed up again to watch him play. However, Pitino left halfway through the 2nd quarter.

Challenge Round - Game 2
Salem High, Virginia Beach, Virginia vs. Cypress Lake, Fort Myers, FL

Salem SunDevils defeats Cypress Lake Panthers. Salem made up for going 1-2 by handing Cypress Lake another loss. Lake's Larry McClinton, Jr. made an impact on the game. However, Salem's team play was too much for the Lightning.

Challenge Round - Game 3
Broughton, Raleigh, North Carolina vs. Bishop Verot, Fort Myers, FL

Broughton Capitals defeats Bishop Verot Vikings. The continuing saga of Shavlik Randolph. He went 9/23 from the floor, and 14/20 from the free throw line. I would not call them impressive numbers, most of the misses were point blank layups. However, his 32 points were too much for Bishop Verot to overcome. Broughton's senior guard Mike Brandon is athletic enough to take your eyes off of Randolph. Justin Bone should some great effort for Bishop Verot. Unfortunately, Bishop Verot was severly "outmanned" against Broughton.

Challenge Round - Game 4
Abramson, New Orleans, Louisiana vs. Xaverian, Brooklyn, New York

Abramson Commodores defeats Xaverian Clippers. Warren Scott helped Abramson to the win. Xaverian was ahead most of the game. However, an ankle injury to senior Caswell Smith, allowed Abramson back in. Xaverian never really found the intensity, or the game necessary, to come back from a 12 point deficit. they lost all their defensive tenacity with the loss of Smith's intensity and effort. Xaverian's James Furlong may be the impact player on the team but Caswell Smith gets it done, intensity, great hustle, defender, and scorer.
