Class of 2006 - Martin County

Top Five (by position)

  • Point guard - Derek Power - 5'5", South Fork High School
Several area high school coaches have suggested that Derek is the best pure point guard in the county. His unselfish passing continues to improve. He can stroke the ball with a combination of moves and is learning to penetrate and kick. His foot speed will have to improve for continued success.

  • Wing Guard - David Allison - 5'8", South Fork High School
David has an immediate impact on the game. A nice jumper, no fear taking the ball to the basket, and an excellent defender. His defense overshadows his offensive capabilities. He needs to work on his passing to become more effective.

  • Wing Guard - Brennen Grubbs - 6'3", South Fork High School
Brennen will win the hustle award where ever he goes. He dives after the ball, great defender, shows a good outside shot, and handles the ball well. His forte, rebounding! This kid will get one. He will play a 3 spot, but for now the boards are his. This kid can score! His size hinders his footwork a bit, but he can definitely GO. Expectations will be high on him as he progresses.

  • Forward - T.J. Grace - 6'1", South Fork High School
T.J. has a few things going for him, his legs. This kid can get up and down the floor. He has the capability to make things happen. His quickness on the break and adequate dribbling makes him a presence in the half court as well. Once he becomes less timid offensively, he will be a true force. He has a natural ability to get the offensive rebound and his shooting is improving.

  • Center - Jimmy Pierre - 6'2", Martin County High School
Jimmy is a hoss without a doubt. He is continually polishing his inside moves. He has developed quite an array of up and under moves to keep many a player guessing just what he is going to do with the ball. Hopefuly, he can continue to improve.

    Other top players

Guard - Brendan McCarthy - 5'6", South Fork High School
Brendan has a great stroke on the ball and lots of hustle. His foot speed holds him back. He tends to put the ball on the floor and drive rather than utilize his jump shot capabilities.

Guard - Brandon McGath - 5'9", Community Christian
He has skills, he just has to keep his head in the game. Good leaper and athletic. He is a guard, not a post player.

Post - Cory New - 6'0", South Fork High School
He has come a long way. Excellent rebounder and capable offensively. He needs to work on being consistent.

Guard - Stuart Smith - 5'9, Martin County High School
Strange mechanics for a jump shot, but it goes in. He needs to work on his foot speed. Stuart is predictable on offense relying on his left hand, but still manages to score. He can handle the ball, but needs to work on both hands.

Guard - Noah Zazulia - 6'0", Martin County High School
He has a nice shot and good guard capabilities. He will have to work on his shot release as it takes a bit long to get the shot off. Excellent defender.

    A footnote.
These kids formed the core of the 14/U YMCA Stars. The team was coached by Perry Smith this year and showed signs of improvement this year finishing in the top 8 in the tough 14/U division of YBOA. The additions of T.J. Grace and David Allison was a major reason for the team's success. Brennen Grubbs has done an excellent job adding the 3 point shot to his game. Cory New showed great progress throughout the season as the expectations for Jimmy Pierre may have been a bit high. Stuart Smith and Noah Zazulia were excellent role players for the team.
Unfortunately, Coach Smith, in his first year as a head coach, utilized a 7 or 8 man rotation and several players did not see much play time. Brendan McCarthy continues to show potential and saw limited minutes throughout the season. Derek Power has gotten stuck in the wrong guard spot for quite some time. He is a great shooter, as everytime he touches the ball the coaches wanted him to shoot. However, his point guard skills were never called on as Grubbs and Allison ran the point for most of the season. Too bad, these two guards can really light it up.

"My son's high school coach gave him a copy of the book and he read it in two days. Now he is leading the effort to get himself a scholarship. The book is inspiring and effective for high school athletes."
