31st Annual City of Palms Classic - Final Day

Challenge Round Game 1

Brandon 66, Wilcox Central 56

The first game of the day featured a top rated Florida junior in Zaronn Cann. Cann did not disappoint in this game as he maintained his composure in a 21 point, 6 rebound performance. He did what needed to be done as he used a variety of moves to find his way to go 5 of 6 from the free throw line. He had a nice overall game. Brandon guard Korri Ennis helped the winning effort with a 13 point effort. Wilcox Central's Michael Williams contributed a 18 point, 9 rebound game. Williams has signed with Texas for his college career.

Challenge Round Game 2

Pendleton School 86, Naples 66

A lot has been written about the joint effort program established by IMG Academies and the Pendleton School. We'll have to concentrate on underclassmen as Pendleton has youth galore on this team. Pendleton's sophomore point guard Dwain Williams was impressive as he distributed the ball well and provided some timely 3's as Naples kept the game close for 2 and a half quarters. Absent from the starting lineup was highly touted 8th grade sensation Michael Beasley. Beasley looked almost bored throughout the game as he offered up a quality 15 point, 17 rebound game. Naples head coach Matt Chlebek was on the sidelines for this game. He seemed to provide a spark as Naples went in at halftime down only a single point. Naples players Mark Wise (19 points) and Renel Saintil (15 points) showed some poise in trying to keep this game from being a total blowout in the 4th quarter.Pendleton sophomore Jake Worley looked good as he went 4 for 5 from the 3-point line and finished with 22 points.

Challenge Round Game 3

Birmingham-Parker 75, Dallas-Seagoville 68

Two words for this Seagoville loss, Lamarcus Aldridge. Aldridge suffered a sprain in Monday's loss to Ft. Myers and did not play in this one. I will say that Jacoie Shivers stepped well in his absence with an 18 point game. However, in the end, it was too much Walter Sharpe. Sharpe finished with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Seagoville's Donald Sloan kept the game close with his 20 points. Rod Smitherman contributed 20 points as well in Parker's win.

Challenge Round Game 4

Miami Senior 67, Charlotte 59

Miami Senior freshman sensation Edwin Rios was impressive. His ability to hit the 3 pointer (4 of 8), put the ball on the floor, move without the ball, and free throw shooting (a perfect 11 of 11 from the charity stripe) was a game to behold. Rios finished with 31 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Miami Senior sophomore Dwayne Collins' 16 point, 9 rebound (seemd like more to me) performance helped keep Charlotte in check throughout the game. Charlotte had their chances in this one as Collins got into foul trouble early and was limited to 15 minutes of actual play time. Charlotte guard Bryan Dees hit 5 of his first 6 3-pointers. But, he went cold in the 4th quarter going 0 for 5. Andre Brown chipped in 18 points for Charlotte in the loss.

Consolation Bracket Championship - 7th place

Jacksonville-Raines 70, Ft. Myers 31

This was by far the ugliest game of the day. I thought I would be saying this about Naples. But, Ft. Myers looked absolutely terrible. Ft. Myer's center Robinson Louisme had, what Tulane should hope not to happen, a terrible game as he finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds. The entire Ft. Myers offense looked out of place and bewildered. Not to take away from a very good Jacksonville-Raines team which came to play! Junior guards Derwin Kitchens (31 points, 11 rebounds) and Juwann James (9 points, 8 rebounds) showed that this team is for real. Raines never looked back in this blowout of Ft. Myers, a highly ranked 5A team.

Championship Round - 5th place

South Gwinnett, GA 74, Bremerton, WA 53

This was a game of Williams's as North Carolina bound 6'9" Marvin Williams faced up against No. 1 6'2" junior Louis Williams with North Carolina coach Roy Williams in attendance. Bremerton's Williams tried to run the point in the first quarter of this game,. It didn't work well as the South Gwinnett back court of Williams (22 points, 8 rebounds) and Mike Mercer (26 points, 10 rebounds) got out to a 22-6 lead and never looked back. Several alley oops for Gwinnett's Williams throughout the game and a dunk over the 6'9" Williams were some of the highlights of this matchup. All I can say is WOW! Louis Williams showed an impressive variety of offense as he got to the rim with such ease in this game. His defense of the larger Bremerton Williams in the 4th qaurter was equally impressive. Marvin posted up on Louis several times, one of those times taking down the younger Williams. Louis sat out for several minutes before returning to the game.

Championship Round - 3rd place

Lexington Catholic, KY 70, St. John's Jesuit, OH 66

I took a bet with my kid on this one. He picked Lexington Catholic and 5. So, I won the bet. However, he got the winning team right as Lexington got down early in this game. However, uncommitted Demetrius Green (22 points) came to play. Lexington Catholic was definitely the crowd favorite in this one. An exciting game to watch as Lexington used a variety of defenses on St. John's Jesuit and B.J. Raymond (24 points). A great game featuring two well coached squads. The 3rd quarter was the difference as Lexington ouscored St. John's 21-14 to hold on for the win.

Championship Round - 1st place

Los Angeles-Westchester, CA 70, LSU Lab, LA 66

The championship game proved to be an interesting matchup as guard strong Los Angeles-Westchester went battle (literally) against Glen Davis and LSU Lab. The matchup was interesting to say the least. Davis a highly touted LSU recruit was impressive. His 35 point, 12 rebound netted him the tournament MVP award, normally reserved for a player from the championship team. However, this one wouldn't have even been close without Davis. Davis is without a doubt the reason this team wins. Fellow LSU recruit and teammate Garrett Temple offered his usual game with 16 points. However, in the end, this game was all Westchester from beginning to end. Westchester closed out at half time with with a 15-6 2nd quarter. The always loaded Westchester featured some highlights from Marcus Johnson, Jon Toliver, and University of Southern California recruit Gabriel Pruitt. The Monday matchup between Lexington Catholic and Westchester provided a look at how Westchester could handle a low scoring effort as Lexington held Westchester to 58 points. Westchester prevailed in the Monday matchup but Lexington made them work for the win.
