Running the website with daily updates year round is a tasking job. I love it but it does wear the body down. So when summer time hits, I just need a break from everything once in a while.
Some break I got this past summer, I spent what felt like way too much time in a gym.
My knees are still creeking and the glucosamine intake is slowly bringing them back to normal. But, I do have to admit that I had some great experiences this past summer. One of these
opportunities was a chance to work a session of Dave Devenzio's National Point Guard Camp. Thanks, Rich!
The camp was a great experience and, as is a somewhat normal situation, another coach was invited to help out, Coach Barbara Nelson of Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC.
Barb and I were talking at one of the gym sessions about some of the books we had been reading. She proceeded to tell about a book, The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches by Jeff Janssen.
I mentioned to her that I was aware of the book. Her comment was, "It's one of the best books I've ever read." So, I contacted Jeff at the end of the summer and he was gracious enough to send a
copy of The Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches as well as a copy of
Championship Team Building: What Every Coach Needs to Know to Build a Motivated, Committed & Cohesive Team.
I appreciate Jeff putting together a great tool for coaches. Also, I want to thank Barb Nelson for the reminder of the book.
Well, Barb was right. I continue to get really lucky on the books that I have selected over the past several months to review. Jeff Jansen's book,
Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches, is by far
one of the best books I have the opportunity to read "ever". He doesn't offer quick fixes or specific formulas or even certain regimes to stick by. Instead,
he offers insghts into the mental part of increasing your coaching performance. Jeff and Greg Dale offer up the likes of Pat Summitt, Mike Krzyweski (Coach "K"),
and countless other top notch coaches. The list of contributing coaches are not just basketball coaches nor are they just college coaches. These are coaches that are the best in their
field.
The book offers up page after page of insightful information. Each chapter offers a key point summary for your added benefit. It starts from the beginning
of what successful coaching is all about. I knew I was going to like the book when the first section of chapter one was entitled, "Success is much more
than X's and O's". I don't how many times I have harped on this subject for the past 6 years that PowerBasketball has been around. It was nice to find someone
that had a similar outlook on the potential of becoming a successful coach. The introduction as well indicated, "Coaches, CEO's, managers, teachers,
and parents can all benefit from this book." I knew these few key points in the first ten pages were a sign of good things to come. I was not disappointed.
Jeff delves into the subject of discovering the Seven Secrets of Successful Coaches.
As he puts it, Credible coaches are
- Character-based
- Competent
- Committed
- Caring
- Confidence-builders
- Communicators
- Consistent
The ensuing chapters offer insight into and information to back up Jeff's statements. The addition of so many leading coaches in different sports allows
the book to not come across as "just for a basketball coach" or "just for whoever". The point is that anyone can benefit from following Jeff's advice.
Chapters challenge you to look into your coaching aspirations and ask why you really do coach. Why do you? What can you do to improve? How do you go about
improving? What are the necessary steps? How can I get my athletes to show me respect? Why don't my athletes show me more respect? All these questions
are answered and more. Exercises are offered to reinforce the need for becoming a credible coach.
I don't do this very often. But, I will say it. Everyone needs this book. This is a great book. No, this is a phenomenal book! This is one of those books that every coach should have in
his or her library. It should also be one of the first. You will appreciate all the work that was put into presenting the material.
