2002 NCAA Approved Shooting Stars All-Star Basketball Camp
Visit the official website, http://www.BasketballsBest.com

The annual Shooting Stars Basketball Camp was held July 11-15, 2002 at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. There were approximately 100 athletes in attendance. Listed below are the Individual Award winners and All-Star team. The All-Star team selections are from the Over 15 Division only.

Individual Awards - Under 15 Division
The Under 15 division was dominated by several key players. Fred Gates (MVP), the youngest player at the camp, was quite impressive. He is fun to watch and pretty dynamic with his fakes and shakes to the basket. Watch for him in the coming years. Derek Power showed the best skills throughout the camp. He was clearly the best fundamental player in this division. Nothing fancy, just a good solid player.Unfortunately, we didn't get the names of 2 other players that stood out, #31 (from Orlando) and #33. They each displayed the ability to run the floor well and hit the open jump shot with consistency.

Most Valuable Player
Fred Gates, Chicago, IL
Free Throw Shooter
Derek Power, 5'-5", Fr., South Fork High School, Stuart, FL
Jump Shooter

Individual Awards - Over 15 Division
The Over 15 division had a vast array of talent. Several guards stood out above the rest. Ryan Wedel was clearly the best shooter at the camp. This 5'9" freshman from Kansas can really light it up from beyond the arc. Derrick Loney threw down the only dunk in the All-Star game. He has a nice outside game and could put in on the floor. Nice overall game. I'll call this kid a guard, Bryan Borstlemann. This 6'5" kid from Manatee was impressive. Rebounding, shooting, defending, blocking shots. He was all over the floor. He definitely outplayed the camp MVP, Brandon Drayton, in the All-Star game. Borstlemann went for 13 points while Drayton could only manage a single basket. Drayton was definitely the dominate player throughout the week. He did not get the ball enough to demonstrate his abilities in the All-Star game. A big guy to watch from Bishop O'Connell is senior Robert Wills. He showed a good overall game, hitting timely 3's, rebounding, and making some great passes to guards cutting to the basket. Jeffrey Rushton, a 6'7" junior, had an excellent week and was the high scorer in the All-Star game with 15 pts. Although he is about 20 pounds overweight, he has a nice 15' jumper and showed some good post moves throughout the camp.
