St. Benedict's of Newark, New Jersey coached by Danny Hurley, won the 31st Annual adidas Kingdom of the Sun Invitational Tourney title by defeating previously undefeated St. Petersburg Lakewood 65-55 before a SRO crowd at the Vanguard HS gymnasium. 6'8" junior All-American Lance Thomas led the Gray Bees with 24 points while tourney MVP 6'1" junior Eugene Harvey chipped in 14 points. 6'5" Soph sensation Corey Stokes and 6' junior guard David Culliban added 10 points each for a well-balanced scoring attack. The losing Spartans were led by a 23 point effort by 6'2" Senior Sean Morrison who poured in 23 points while 6'2" Senior Louis Murphy added 10 points. The "Gray Bees" are now 9-0 on the season while Lakewood drops to 9-1.
The Bees earlier defeated host Vanguard 51-37 in a tough semifinal game with Harvey tallying 15 points and Vanguard's Naylor scoring 13 points. Lakewood had a71-58 win over Pleasure Ridge Park in their semifinal game with Morrison dropping in 23 points and 6'4" senior Mario telfair adding 21 points.
Pleasure Ridge Park of Louisville, Kentucky won the 3rd place battle 72-48 as the Panthers used a balanced scoring attack with 4 players in double figures led by 6' senior JaJuan Spillman who tallied 15 points and 6'5" junior Vincent Crutcher added 14 points. Ocala Vanguard was led by 6'3" senior Jamal Naylor who scored 13 points. Pleasure Ridge Park goes to 8-3 while Vanguard drops to 7-3.
In the 5th place game, Eustis won a thrilling 41-39 decision over Class A power Orlando Pine Castle Christian 41-39 in a tight defensive battle. 5'11" senior Joe Burnett led the winners with 16 points while the losing "Eagles" were led by a pair of juniors in 6'2" John Harper and 6' Brandon Jackson who scored 9 points each. Eustis goes to 12-1 while Pine Castle drops to 9-4.
In the consolation championship, Bishop Hendricken of Rhode Island defeating Cincinnati, Ohio LaSalle 71-48. DJ Carcieri, a 6' senior, led the Hawks with 18 points while his allstar team mate, 6' junior Joe Mazzulla, tallied 7 points before exiting the game early in the 2nd quarter with a severe sprained ankle. 6'3" senior Curt Wiebell led the losing Lancers with 14 points while 6'4" senior team mate Colin Flynn added 12 points.
