Holiday Hoopla, Vero Beach, First Round Games.
Game 1, Auburndale vs. Miami-Southwest
Auburndale started out this game a bit flat. The junior guard tandem of Brandon Giles, P.J. Turner, and Kendrick Johnson began to set the tone after
settling down after the first 3 minutes of the game. A 23-12 first quarter lead would be almost enough points to the game as the Bloodhounds held
Southwest to just 14 points for the rest of the game. P.J. Turner (18 pts) and Kendrick Johnson (17 pts.) copmbined for 35 points in the 62-26 win.
They will meet Dr. Phillips in the second round.
Game 2, Dr. Phillips vs. Hernando
Not enough the availability of Jeff Brown could have helped the 7 man squad from Hernando against a stronger Mario Sisinni-led Dr. Phillips
team. Another blowout win as Dr. Phillips held a 33-14 halftime lead. Dr. Phillips literally did not have to score again as Hernando would only
score 29 points for the entire game. A note for Hernando, give Daniel Vidboom the ball wherever he is on the floor. He can handle the ball, catch
and shoot, and isn't afraid to dribble penetrate on occasion. He was the only player close to giving Hernando any consistent offense as he had 14 points for the game.
Sisinni led Boone with 22 points as they posted the 65-29 win.
Game 3, William R. Boone vs. Palm Bay
I was considering the front door exit after the first two blowout victories. However, Palm Bay gave Boone a game. Boone came out with a good
starting 4. Gerald Poke finished the starting unit but slowed Boone down considerably and basically stayed on the defensive end of the floor the
few minutes he was in the game. Boone got out on Palm Bay. However, Palm Bay adjusted and started making a game out of it when Boone subbed the entire
starting lineup. Garfield Blair, Preston Adams, Marion Massey, and Chris Irvin watched along the sideliness as Palm Bay relied on junior
Derek LaSane and some quality half court play to close out the half with only a four point deficit. Boone came out and got serious in the fourth quarter
to come out with a 38-29 victory.
Game 4, Vero Beach vs. New Smyrna Beach
Vero Beach is going to get a game. It just wasn't going to be in the first of the tournament. An outmanned New Smyrna Beach team was outscored
56-31 in the final three quarters after only being down by two points at the end of the first quarter. Senior Ray Cummings and junior Mark Lohuis each scored
17 points as Vero cruised to a 66-39 win. Ben Walker was the only player in double digits for New Smyrna Beach as he had 19 points in the loss.
Derek Harper Classic, West Palm Beach.
First Round Games.
Now here's a tournament. You want to see some quality teams getting out after each other. Palm Beach Lakes gym is a good place to be. First round games
featured top ranked Class 6A, and ranked 8th nationally, host Palm Beach Lakes showing Homestead a quick exit to the consolation round with their 74-37 win.
Palm Beach Lakes will play Suncoast in the second round. Class 4A Suncoast wants to return to the glory days. They upended Keaton Grant and Class 6A Kissimmee Gateway. A 67-60 victory
for the local team. Class 6A Pompano-Ely came to play in another first round matchup of state-raked teams. Their opponent, class 2A St. Andrews, has
nearly matched their total losses for last season as they stumbled in the closing minutes of this game. Ely outscored St. Andrews 18-3 in the fourth
quarter to come away with a 61-53 win. St. Andrews' leader, junior Xavier Perkins, was held to just 7 points. Avery Holley led Ely with 20 points.
The game of the night was Class 4A Orlando-Jones and Class 1A Grandview Prep squaring off. The game would prove to be the best game of the evening
as it took overtime to decide this one. Grandview Prep played shorthanded as they were missing two of their starters. However, you would not have
known as they gave Jones a battle. Senior Francis Agenor dropped 28 points in Grandview Prep's effort. Junior Calvin Liptrot (14 pts.) and
senior Darius Walker (17 pts.) led Jones in scoring.
A costly turnover in overtime would allow Jones an unconstested layup and the 75-73 win.
31st Annual Kingdom of the Sun, Ocala.
First Round Games.
Sean Morrison scored 18 points to lead Lakewood in the opening game of the Kingdom of the Sun Tournament with a 50-38 win over Stephenson, Stone Mountain, GA.
Game two featured undefeated Dr. Michael Krop, with some very good sophomores that can play, and legendary coach "Shakey" Rodriguez. However, someone forgot to tell Pleasure Ridge Park from Louisville, Kentucky.
Dr. Krop tasted defeated for the first time this season in their 77-64 loss. Sophomore Orane Chin led Dr. Krop with 21 points.
Game 3 saw Class 1A Pine Castle Christian, under the direction of coach Mark Rickman, squeeze out a 60-58 win over Banneker, College Park, Georgia. Eddie Piccinni led Pine Castle with 12 points.
Game 4 had Eustis getting out after Warwick, Rhode Island school Bishop Hendricken. Eustis' Joe Burnett and his 19 points lifted them to the 65-45 victory.
Class 1A Calusa Prep, unfortunately ineligible for post season play, was next up against a strong Cincinnati, Ohio La Salle squad in Game 5. La Salle is coming off of a
23-2 season. University of Miami-signee Denis Clemente provided the necessary spark to deny La Salle a try at matching their 2002 championship at the tournament as Calusa Prep won the game 57-54.
Local team, North Marion, and Bartow provided another good game as North Marion snuck out with the 55-50 win. North Marion's post play was too much for Bartow.
Sterling James led North Marion with 13 points and Jack Murphy led Bartow with 15 points.
The 7:00 PM matchup of host Vanguard and Hillliard was hardly one at all. Vanguard rolled in this one with a 70-40 win. Dominic Burgess led
Vanguard in scoring in only 3 quarters of play.
The night cap was young guns Lakeland-Kathleen taking on Newark, New Jersey St. Benedicts. St. Benedicts is coached by former college great Danny Hurley.
He moved one game closer to following in dad's footsteps with a 62-55 win over Kathleen. Freshman Miguel Paul led 3 players in double
figures for Kathleen with 12 points. It was Lance Thomas' 23 points that was too much for Kathleen.
