John Carroll Pre-season Classic
Posted, 11/24/2004 4:11:15 AM

Ft. Pierce, FL - The Port St. Lucie Jaguars battled with the Palm Beach Gardens Gators in an exciting game on Tuesday evening. Andre Lewis and Josh Hambrick led the Jaguars in the scoring department. The first half, actually the first 3 quarters, saw the Gators control the tempo and the scoring. Hunter Ross, a 6'5" 2006 forward, was a handful as he scored 18 points. Jeremy Montgomery helped to balance Gardens offense with his 17 point effort. However, two minutes into the fourth quarter Port St. Lucie took their first lead of the game with the score at 48-46. It was a lead they would not relinquish. Palm Beach Gardens tied the score back at 48-48. But, the Jaguars would come down and score again at 50-48. The lead increased to as many as seven in the final minute of the game. Gardens tried to get back into it but Port St. Lucie proved to be too much in the end. On a coaching note, the Port St. Lucie Jaguars have a familiar face back on the bench in John Picchiarini. Kareem Rodriguez is in his 2nd year as head coach and now has former head coach Picchiarini as an assistant. Port St. Lucie will be a tough team this season.

Host team John Carroll looked like their were going to be handed a blowout loss in the second game as they fell behind early to South Fork by a score of 17-4. However, the Golden Rams settled down and finished the first quarter only down 17-10. South Fork's starting five looked good, it was the bench that hurt them. In the second quarter, 2005 point guard Ernest "Bud" McIntyre went down with a severe ankle sprain. A factor that the Bulldogs would not recover from as John Carroll closed within two points at halftime with the score 28-26. It really looked like it was going to be a 5 man rotation all night for South Fork until McIntyre went down as not a single substitution was made until the incident nearly halfway through the second quarter. The thrid quarter ended up a tie as both teams each netted 10 points each. The fourth quarter was exciting to watch as John Carroll used South Fork's tired legs to take over the game. South Fork juniors Brennen Grubbs (15 points), T.J. Grace (19 points), and Brendan McCarthy (5 points) looked worn out midway through the final quarter. John Carroll senior guard Kyle Peters, normally a great free throw shooter, missed 4 of 6 free throws late in the game, including both free throws after a technical foul on South Fork senior Chad Harris. However, John Carroll held on as 2005 guard Eber Wright knocked down a couple of free throws to seal the 54-48 victory to complete his 26 point performance. Keep in mind that John Carroll was without starting senior guard Matt Marcorelle's 20 point per game average. He is out until January with a broken collarbone. The Golden Rams were also missing another double digit performer in starting junior point guard David Allison. He is out with a broken finger until next week. Allison was the starting point guard for South Fork last year.
