Ft. Pierce, FL - A lot of talk over the summer is finally coming to an end. First year program Jensen Beach showed that they
can play last night as they dropped John Carroll, 57-27. Coach Theresa Iulucci has to be excited about this group of girls.
Three players in double figures that feature 2008 6'3" Brett Benzio, 2006 6'0" Brooke Burgess, and 2006 5'11" Erica Gadson proved
to be too much for the Golden Rams. Benzio added 15 points and 11 rebounds as Burgess had 16 points and Gadson had 14 points.
John Carroll was led by 2005 Melissa Grogan with 10 points. A 35-11 half time score was stretched to a nearly 40 point deficit near the
end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter went by quickly as a running clock lessen the pain for John Carroll.
The early game featured a tough St. Lucie West Centennial defeating Ft. Pierce Central, 57-21, at John Carroll's gymnasium.
Centennial is going to be tough with 2005 Carly Collins in the post and 2006 Genesis Kelly handling the ball. Kelly had 15 points and
several nice assists as Collins led the team with 26 points. Ft. Pierce Central looked out-manned in this effort. One bright
start may emerge as 2006 Tiffany Knight (12 points) showed herself to be the most athletic player on the court. Centennial didn't play
with the intensity one might expect. However, the intensity will get picked up when the regular season starts.
Today's games feature Jensen Beach playing Ft. Pierce Central at 5:30 and John Carroll hosting Centennial in the 7:00pm game.
Admission is $4.00 per adult. A nice Wednesday night for some girl's basketball. It would have been nice to see Jensen Beach and Centennial play
each other. The game will have to wait a little bit longer.
