A special thanks to the head coach of St. Thomas Aquinas, Steve Strand, for the invitation to a well run, on schedule, one day camp
sponsored by the South Florida Chiefs Basketball Club. Coach Strand didn't say how many wanted in, but there were 80 kids ready to
play some basketball. The usual "deer on the headlights" look wore off the players by their 3rd game of the day. Some kids really showed what
they can do. A few players soldified themselves as top players while others made some noise and introduced themselves to the South
Florida high school basketball scene. Here's the take on my top 20 players that proved they can play the game. The next update will
have more player evaluations. Stay tuned!
Leonard Hankerson, 6'-3", St. Thomas Aquinas, 2007. The most impressive kid in the camp. He can do it all. Post up, bring it down
the floor, hit the 3, find the open man, defend (in post and the wing), rebound, slash his way to the basket. A great kid with a great
attitude. Coach Strand has to be excited to have this kid. This is one to watch for the future.
- Martavis Kee, 6'-2", St. Thomas Aquinas, 2007.
Is Coach Strand lucky or what? This kid is smooth. Nothing seems to bother him.
He is patient in the half court, can hit the open 3 pointer, defends well, definitely makes a great pass, and isn't shy about attacking
the basket. A fun player to watch. He makes it look easy.
- Jonathon John, 6'-3", South Dade, 2006.
This kid is what hard work is all about. A lefty with some moves, a shot, and the ability
to make things happen. Coach John Herron will be glad to have Jonathon to add his flavor to South Dade. Impressive and shows potential.
- Brandon Williams, 6'-3", American Heritage, 2006.
You can just tell the kid is a ball player. The real way you can
tell is to watch him get active. How high does Brandon jump anyway? It's a pretty impressive vertical leap. A good game compliments this athlete.
- Tristan Washington, 6'-5", Coral Glades, 2006.
Tristan has a basketball body. A long, lean, muscular build. He gets good positioning
as a defender. He can score well from 15 feet and in. You can't deny him. He will get to the basket.
- Quintel Griffin, 6'-7", American Heritage, 2006.
The biggest body in the gym at this camp. He showed that he can use it. Emphatic
dunks were the norm for Quintel. He is a solid defender and a good post game. It should enable this kid a good future.
- Remy Rodriguez, 6'-1", Everglades, 2006.
Talk about a kid that makes a team better and Remy is the kid to mention. Wow, he
passes, shoots, defends, rebounds, and does it with a smile and intensity. Danny Herz should be thinking point guard with Remy.
- Tanarvis Lawhorn, 5'-6", South Broward, 2006.
(Picture at right.) One of the more impressive players at camp. His size is not a detriment like it
would be to most. He can flat handle the ball. His tenacity on defense is examplary. His court vision and shooting only to add to his
qualities. A name to remember for the coming season.
- Theo Hatcher, 6'-5", American Heritage, 2007.
Theo is an unemotional player. He can do things with the ball whether it is shooting, passing,
or dribbling. He doesn't skip a beat if he misses or makes the shot. He plays through it all. A nice aspect for a player with potential.
- Jamal Owens, 6'-4", Miramar, 2007.
We watched drills for about an hour. This kid stood out to me. He has one of those athletic bodies,
his basketball improves everyday, and you can't hope anything but good things for him. He's omly a sophomore. A lot of good basketball is yet to come from him.
- Evan Hill, 6'-8", Cypress Bay, 2006.
You can tell Evan has fun playing basketball. His game is coming to him. He is not afraid to
shoot the outside jump shot, the occasional 3 pointer, or attacking the basket. His long arms and 6'8" body make blocking a shot look pretty easy.
- Arsenio Avant, 5'-6", Everglades, 2007.
One of the quickest kids in the camp. This kid has some major afterburners that can kick in.
A smart player with a good feel for the court and where everyone is. He can thread the neeedle with his passes. He's not afraid to shoot the open jumpshot either.
- Anthony Fernandez, 6'-4", Belen Jesuit, 2006.
You hear good things about kids and you want to see if all the talk is true.
Anthony has put some size on his frame and proves to be a good prospect. He can handle the ball, catch and shoot (with or without a
defender in his face), find the open teammate, or attack the basket.
- Richard Sirju, 6'-0", Piper, 2006.
Let's talk about a shooter. This kid is automatic like a camera. WOW!! Did he miss more than
3 shots all day long? I can tell you this kid can flat shoot the ball. You better get 4 hands in his face. Because, he did it with 2 hands in
his face every time I watched.
- Julian Miller, 6'-3", Everglades, 2007.
Julian has potential. He has some nice offensive moves. He can put the ball on the floor
and isn't afraid to shoot it either. He defends well and can push the ball up the floor.
- Chris Hall, 6'-0", Westminster Academy, 2006.
Chris is a rail-thin guard. You can't let his size fool you. He can drive to the basket,
shoot from behind the arc, and has a nice mid-range jumpshot as well. His offense overshadows his defense for now.
- Darren Mckhan, 6'-0", Miramar, 2006.
Darren is the kind of player you want to give the ball to. Good things seem to happen when he touches
the ball. He could be on the wing, shooting a nice mid-range 15 footer, slashing to the basket, or fighting for a rebound. He has both sides to his game
with his quick hands to steal the ball and move the player somewhere they don't want to be.
- Luis Velazquez, 5'-11", South Dade, 2006.
Luis was one of the more impressive point guards. He handles the ball like there is a string
attached to it. He can get to the basket with his quick first step and can shoot the outside jumper when needed. A nice addition for South Dade.
- Max Spinner, 6'-0", Boca Raton, 2006.
Max has a unique method for shooting the ball. However, two points is two points. It is sometimes
three point for Max. He can do it the old fashioned way by driving to the basket for the "and 1" or hitting the three. He learns to defend better
and people will talk about this scoring machine.
- Jeffrey Cuevas, 5'-11", Coral Glades, 2006.
Is Jeffrey a track star? He was almost always the first kid down the floor and I'm
not talking about cherry-pickin'. He looks best in transition and shows promise in the half court. A good jump shoot and the word "hustle"
written all over this kid.
Additional players 11/1/2004 5:39:25 PM A few more names added. This list is Definitely in NO particular order.
- Harris Gelin, 6'-2", Monarch, 2007. Harris should a nice intermediate game with his 15-18 foot jumper and attacking the basket on occasion.
- Dustin Auricchio, 6'-2", Miami Senior, 2007. A nice mid-range game, good moves from the short corner, defends well, and can take some punishment defensively. A solid player with good overall size.
- Alex Aparico, 6'-3", St. Thomas Aquinas, 2006. Alex would be next line at #21 if we listed everyone numerically. He has a solid overall game, fundamentally sound, and a hard worker.
- Ariel Robinson, 6'-2", Stoneman Douglas, 2007. I liked Ariel's game. He has good size for his position and a nice medium range jumper to compliment his style.
- Orville Medrano, 5'-6", Coral Springs, 2006. You have to give the kid credit. The kid gets out there and works hard. A streaky outside shooter that handles the ball and attacks the basket.
- Wille Render, 5'-10", American Heritage, 2007. I have heard alot about this player. Willie showed a nice touch with his outside shooting and played well defensively.
- Chris Uz, 5'-7", Everglades, 2007. Chris wasn't the only guard at the camp that could use the weight room. It would definitely improve his game as he sees the floor well and will hit the open jumpshot when needed.
- Jason Alfred, 6'-4", Edison, 2005. Jason was the lone senior at the camp. His outside game shows promise as his athleticism allows him to attack the basket easilly. Works hard on the defensive end.
- Anthony Delevoe, 6'-2", South Broward, 2006. Anthony looks like a shot blocker with his long arms and aggressiveness toward rebounding. He works hard for position on both ends of the floor for the rebound.
- Daryl Ragbeer, 5'-10", Cypress Bay, 2007. Daryl has a nice outside shot. His consistency to hit the three pointer helps his offensive game. He seems most comfortable on the wing.
- Ryan Scarnecchia, 6'1", St. Thomas Aquinas, 2006. Ryan has the signs of a St. Thomas Aquinas player. He has solid fundamentals. He is strong and defends well.
- Clark Cooper, 6'-3", Cypress Bay, 2006. Clark shows a nice mid-range game with a nice step back jumpshot. He likes working more like a big guy. He'll have to grow if he wants to stay in the post.
- Sean Shapiro, 5'-8", Monarch, 2006. A smart point guard that sees the floor well. He's not an overwhelming guard. But, he shoots well and shows no fear in the half court.
- Phillip Elize, 5'-11", Everglades, 2006. Phillip showed to be one of the smarter guards on the floor. He moves well and has a quickness to turn a defender.
- Javier Flores, 5'-11", St. Thomas Aquinas, 2006. Javier has some qualities that a coach can appreciate. He has a quick release when he catches and shoots the ball. He finds the right spot to be to catch the open jumpshot.
- Depriest Ivey, 5'-10", American Heritage, 2007. Depriest has quick written all over him. His defense can bother anyone. His offense relies on his quickness and his passing.
- James Williams, 6'-1", Miramar, 2007. His mid range game is right on. Don't let him catch it under the arc or around the free throw line. He will hit the jumper.
- Octavious Hawkins, 6'-0", South Broward, 2007. Octavious showed that he can handle the ball. His athleticism is a plus as he can hit the open jumpshot and runs the floor well.
- Darian Williams, 6'-1", Northeast, 2007. It's nice to see kids working on the midrange game. Darian knocked down several jumpers. He moves well in transition and is a physical, tenacious defender.
- Janeroe Malone, 5'-10", Coral Glades, 2007. This kid is physical and will fight for the ball. Don't let his size fool you. He plays hard, handles the ball, and posses good athleticism.
We're halfway there. Another 20 players will be added by tomorrow evening.
